Class Overview

This half-day class will show you how simple it is to add your own fabrics and panels to EQ8. Learn how to import fabrics, straighten, scale, crop, and add the fabrics to your Favorites library! Discover the differences between fabrics and panels and how to edit them for your design.

Using photos in your quilt is very similar to how you would use fabrics. Learn the difference between photos and fabrics, import photos for use in a photo quilt, and discover new ways to use photos that you may not have even imagined.

Note: This class was offered at previous EQ Academy workshops and will cover the same material.

Course Topics

  • Use provided fabric scans to learn the process of importing, rotating, and cropping to the repeat
  • Learn about fabric scale to make sure your fabrics look the same in your virtual quilt as they do in your sewn quilt
  • Set fabrics into quilts and learn how to rotate and fussy cut the fabrics within the patches and borders
  • Discuss the steps (and caveats) for taking photos of fabrics with your camera
  • Import fabrics into EQ8 from fabric manufacturer websites
  • Save fabric images or photos from the web for use in EQ8
  • Download and install fabric libraries from Electric Quilt and Do You EQ websites
  • Create My Favorite Libraries to save your fabrics for use in all EQ8 projects

Who Should Take this Course

  • Students who have taken an EQ8 beginner course, whether at EQ Academy or another venue
  • Students who are interested in importing their own fabrics for use in EQ8
  • Students who are interested in using photos in their quilts
  • Students who are capable of navigating to and from the My EQ8 folder and the Downloads folder on their computers (moving files — copying/pasting — between these two directories is repeated often)

  • Handouts that include steps to repeat at home, plus resources for downloading fabrics from several different manufacturers’ websites

About EQ Academy

EQ Academy is a workshop for students wanting to learn how to use their EQ8 software. EQ8 classes are either half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours) with an hour lunch break in between sessions. Each instructor brings years of experience and will provide practical content for the use of software.

How to fill your days: It is not required that you attend all days of the event. You may enroll in as many classes as you like. If you do plan to attend all days, we recommend filling your days with as many classes as you can. Click here to see a complete schedule (PDF) of all the classes being offered.

These are EQ8 computer classes. There will be no sewing during class time.

Please be sure you have the following for class:

  • Laptop with EQ8 software installed, updated, and validated
  • Laptop power cord
  • Mouse (The touch pad on your laptop will work, but having an external mouse makes drawing much easier.)
  • Extra batteries for your mouse, if wireless
  • Mouse pad
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
  • Sweater or light jacket (classroom temperature can vary)

Included with Enrollment

The Electric Quilt Company will provide the following for all enrolled students:

  • Coffee, tea, and water throughout the day
  • Snacks
  • Daily boxed lunches
  • Giveaways!
  • In-class assistance from EQ staff
  • Personal technical support between classes
  • Student discount on EQ products for sale during the event

Lodging and travel are not included in the cost of the workshop. You must make your own arrangements.

We have a block of rooms at the Home2 Suites by Hilton (walking distance from the classrooms) for $139.00/night + tax. View this hotel on a map. Once you have enrolled at EQ Academy, you will receive a confirmation of your enrollment with a special link for the hotel, as well as other hotel and travel suggestions.

The best airport options would be Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), which is about an hour away or the Toledo Express Airport (TOL) which is about 25 minutes away.

About the Teacher

sara Sara Seuberling
Sara began working for The Electric Quilt Company as a graphic design intern back in 2003. Over the years her job duties evolved to more than just graphic design, but also project management and overseeing product development. Sara has been involved with EQ software for 19 years and had a large role in the redesign and development of EQ8. With her knowledge of the ins and outs of the software, she is able to guide students in the proper techniques and solutions for their designs.
