EQ Academy FAQ

What is EQ Academy?

EQ Academy (EQA) is a multi-day workshop in Perrysburg, Ohio for students wanting to learn to use Electric Quilt 8 (EQ8) software. It’s a great way to learn from expert teachers and get inspired by your peers! Don’t own EQ8? Get it now!

When is the next EQ Academy?

Our next EQ Academy event will be May 2-4, 2024. Enrollment will open Tuesday, January 23 at 10:00am ET. Be sure you’re on our email list to be notified.

Where is the event held?

EQ Academy is held in the Bowling Green State University graduate building at the Levis Commons shopping center in Perrysburg, Ohio, just off I-475 and I-75. Conveniently located among restaurants, shopping, and walking distance from the hotels, this facility has been the perfect location for this event since the first EQA in 2015.

Perrysburg is in Northwest Ohio, just south of Toledo. The address for this event is 1655 N Wilkinson Way, Perrysburg, OH 43551 (view on map).

Where can I stay?

A block of rooms is available at the Home2 Suites by Hilton, which is right next to the classrooms (walking distance!). Once you enroll, you’ll receive all the information you need for booking your room at the Home2 Suites. Additional local hotel options are also available.

What’s the best airport to fly into?

There are 2 airports that we recommend:

Is there a shuttle service from the airport?

Click the links below to see what each airport offers. Alternatively, you can use the EQA Message Forum (access given once enrolled) to try and find a travel buddy to help split costs of a taxi, rental car, etc.
Note: Rideshare options are very limited in the Perrysburg area. If you aren’t staying within walking distance of EQ Academy and/or plan to visit local quilt shops, carpooling or car rentals are recommended.

Do I have to attend all days?

No, you do not. Most students will attend all three days, but you may attend whichever days work with your schedule!

What do I need to bring to EQ Academy?

Please be sure you have the following for class:

  • Laptop with EQ8 software installed, updated, and validated
  • Laptop power cord
  • Extension cord
  • Mouse (The touch pad on your laptop will work, but having an external mouse makes drawing much easier. We highly recommend a mouse.)
  • Extra batteries for your mouse, if wireless
  • Mouse pad
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
  • Light sweater or jacket (classroom temperatures can vary)

What’s included with enrollment?

Each class is priced individually as a full-day or half-day class. Along with the class, you will also receive boxed lunches; daily coffee, tea, water, snacks; in-class assistance from EQ staff members; discounts on EQ product; take-home goodies and resources.

Can I communicate with other students beforehand?

After you enroll, you will have access to a forum where you can read and post questions to all enrolled students and teachers. EQ will also use this forum as a way to keep you updated on important information regarding the event, so be sure to check it out. You should receive email notifications for all messages posted to the forum.

Should I enroll in online or in-person classes?

It really comes down to how you learn best. If you want hands-on learning with teachers and staff walking you through each step, we highly recommend in-person classes. You can’t beat the full, immersive experience of EQ Academy. Plus, you can take topic-based classes to really delve into an area of interest. You’ll meet other quilters, interact with EQ staff, enter to win prizes, take home goodies, and learn so much!
If you are unable to travel to Ohio, or you are simply more comfortable at home, you’ll definitely enjoy EQ At Home online classes. The series of classes is designed to take you through EQ8 in its entirety starting from a beginner level. You’ll start with the fundamentals, then build on them to master the program (and even pick up some tricks along the way!). EQ At Home classes are video based so you can pause, rewind, and re-watch as often as needed. You can contact the teacher for questions too! Watch a video about EQ At Home.

Comparing the EQ Academy two-day classes vs. the EQ At Home classes:

The EQ Academy Getting Started with EQ8 2-day class and the EQ At Home Beginner class both cover beginner level topics and program fundamentals. However, the content (such as projects, exercises, and order of presentation) is different.

There is no in-person version of the EQ At Home Next Steps or EQ at Home Master Skills class this spring. The online classes cover a variety of intermediate and advanced topics.

You should choose the class format that works best for you:

EQ Academy classes:
Attending EQ Academy for this class gives you two full days of live education. Working alongside your peers brings comfort knowing you’re all on the same EQ journey together. (Friendships often start at EQ Academy!) Being able to raise your hand and ask the teacher a question gives you instant feedback and clarification. Having the EQ staff available in the classroom is a huge bonus as you should never fall behind. Our staff works hard to make sure everyone stays on track and is fully understanding the concepts. Each teacher provides handouts to work through in class and/or to work on at home as resources down the road. Finally, a change of scenery is always a nice way to clear your mind and be inspired!

EQ at Home classes:
Online classes are perfect for those who are unable to travel, have a busy work/life schedule, and for those who simply prefer to learn on their own, in their home, on their own time. The EQ at Home online class gives you hours of video content to work through at your own pace. Pause, take a break, and come back when it’s convenient for you. Did you not quite understand something? Rewind a bit to watch that part again. While the teacher and staff are not available to you 24/7, we are happy to help during business hours* via the online class forum or through our live chat system. You will have access to this class for the lifetime of Electric Quilt 8. Retake the class as many times as you need!

*Business hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:30pm ET. Closed on major US holidays. Summer hours are observed June-August.
