Class Overview

This class will provide you with the fundamental skills to draw both pieced and applique blocks in EQ8. You’ll draw blocks from scratch, as well as learn to edit existing blocks from the library.

The EasyDraw portion of the class will focus on grid-based blocks and how to set up the worktable and snap settings for successful drawing.

PolyDraw will cover the basics of the CAD-drawing style and making the most of the specialized grids.

The Applique portion will concentrate on using the Shapes tool to draw pre-defined shapes to create fun and unique applique designs. You’ll also use the StarMaker and PosieMaker tools, as well as Wreathmaker.

Note: This class was offered at previous EQ Academy workshops and will cover the same material.

  • Learn how to find the block’s grid.
  • Set up block dimensions and snaps based on the grid.
  • Learn which drawing style (EasyDraw or PolyDraw) is appropriate for the pieced block you want to create.
  • Edit blocks from the library.
  • Determine appropriate sizes for blocks to make them easier to sew.
  • Block vs. Motif for applique designs.
  • Print patterns for the blocks.

About EQ Academy

EQ Academy is a workshop for students wanting to learn how to use their EQ8 software. EQ8 classes are either half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours) with an hour lunch break in between sessions. Each instructor brings years of experience and will provide practical content for the use of software.

How to fill your days: It is not required that you attend all days of the event. You may enroll in as many classes as you like. If you do plan to attend all days, we recommend filling your days with as many classes as you can. Click here to see a complete schedule (PDF) of all the classes being offered.

These are EQ8 computer classes. There will be no sewing during class time.

  • Laptop with EQ8 software installed, updated, and validated
  • Laptop power cord
  • Mouse (The touch pad on your laptop will work, but having an external mouse makes drawing much easier.)
  • Extra batteries for your mouse, if wireless
  • Mouse pad
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
  • Sweater or light jacket (classroom temperature can vary)

Included with Enrollment

The Electric Quilt Company will provide the following for all enrolled students:

  • Coffee, tea, and water throughout the day
  • Snacks
  • Daily boxed lunches
  • Giveaways!
  • In-class assistance from EQ staff
  • Personal technical support between classes

The best airport options would be Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), which is about an hour away or the Toledo Express Airport (TOL) which is about 25 minutes away.

About the Teacher

Jenny Novinsky Jenny Novinsky
Jenny Novinsky started working at Electric Quilt as a graphic design intern in 2001 and stayed on after she graduated from college. Jenny learned how to design “virtual quilts” using EQ long before she knew how to sew them. But it was only a matter time before she caught the quilting bug!

Jenny’s designs have been published in Quilts & More, Quiltmaker Magazine, The Quilter, and Fat Quarterly and she writes the Creative Spark series found in Quiltmaker Magazine. She has also appeared in an episode of Quilting Arts TV on PBS.
