Class Overview

The art of applique can add depth and dimension to any project – your quilts, your crafts, even your clothing. And it’s fun! And what is even more fun is that applique in EQ8 is SO easy. If you can drag your mouse, then you can create an applique patch in EQ8!

This half-day class will teach you how to clone, rotate, and manipulate pre-defined shapes to create petals, teardrops, leaves, circles, stems, hearts, diamonds, stars… the list goes on and on. Learn to use the Wreathmaker, StarMaker, PosieMaker, StencilMaker, and more.

You’ll also expand your drawing skills as you learn to draw with the Bezier and Freehand tools to create applique from scratch or by tracing a photograph. Learn to manipulate curves by adding and deleting nodes and reshaping the line segments between two nodes. You’ll examine how nodes are controlled, plus much more as you create realistic applique designs.

Course Topics

  • Move, resize, rotate, flip, clone, and stack patches using the Shapes tool
  • Create dozens of applique blocks with the 20 pre-defined shapes in EQ8
  • Learn the difference between blocks and motifs in EQ8 and how to use them
  • Combine existing patches from Library blocks to create new blocks
  • Use the Bezier tool and Freehand tool to create smooth curves
  • Edit node properties allowing for more natural and intricate shapes
  • Import images for tracing
  • Learn tips and tricks for tracing images

About EQ Academy

EQ Academy is a workshop for students wanting to learn how to use their EQ8 software. EQ8 classes are either half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours) with an hour lunch break in between sessions. Each instructor brings years of experience and will provide practical content for the use of software.

How to fill your days: It is not required that you attend all days of the event. You may enroll in as many classes as you like. If you do plan to attend all days, we recommend filling your days with as many classes as you can. Click here to see a complete schedule (PDF) of all the classes being offered.

These are EQ8 computer classes. There will be no sewing during class time.

Please be sure you have the following for class:

  • Laptop with EQ8 software installed, updated, and validated
  • Laptop power cord
  • Mouse (The touch pad on your laptop will work, but having an external mouse makes drawing much easier.)
  • Extra batteries for your mouse, if wireless
  • Mouse pad
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
  • Sweater or light jacket (classroom temperature can vary)

Included with Enrollment

The Electric Quilt Company will provide the following for all enrolled students:

  • Coffee, tea, and water throughout the day
  • Snacks
  • Daily boxed lunches
  • Giveaways!
  • In-class assistance from EQ staff
  • Personal technical support between classes

Lodging and travel are not included in the cost of the workshop. You must make your own arrangements.

We have a block of rooms at the Home2 Suites by Hilton (walking distance from the classrooms) for $139.00/night + tax. View this hotel on a map. Once you have enrolled at EQ Academy, you will receive a confirmation of your enrollment with a special link for the hotel, as well as other hotel and travel suggestions.

The best airport options would be Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), which is about an hour away or the Toledo Express Airport (TOL) which is about 25 minutes away.

About the Teacher

Barb Vlack Barb Vlack
Barb Vlack has been working with the Electric Quilt software since the first version of the Electric Quilt software was produced in 1991. In 1997 her book, Too Much Fun!, was published by the Electric Quilt Company as a companion book to EQ3 explaining ways to use the program for designing quilts. She also wrote companion books for EQ4 and EQ5 and contributed to companion books about quilt designing for EQ7 and EQ8. She is internationally known for her expertise with the EQ software and has taught EQ at national and international venues for the past 20 years. She is also an award-winning quilter, designer, author, and teacher of quilt making.
