Class Overview

Using EQ8′s Image Worktable, learn to edit and transform photos to become key design elements of your next quilt. Explore various ways to incorporate images into quilt settings on your computer screen. Use color matching tools and the latest fabric printing techniques.

Love panels? Learn the best ways for getting your panel print into EQ8 at the correct size, then get tips for designing perfect borders around your panel. Only need to use part of the panel? No problem! EQ’s photo tools allow you to use whichever part of your panel you need!

  • Import photos at the proper size for your quilt and for EQ8.
  • Adjust colors of your photos to blend with your fabrics.
  • Use the Eyedropper tool to find colors within your photo to use in your borders and blocks.
  • Learn to crop and straighten panel prints for use in your design.

About EQ Academy

EQ Academy is a workshop for students wanting to learn how to use their EQ8 software. EQ8 classes are either half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours) with an hour lunch break in between sessions. Each instructor brings years of experience and will provide practical content for the use of software.

How to fill your days: It is not required that you attend all days of the event. You may enroll in as many classes as you like. If you do plan to attend all days, we recommend filling your days with as many classes as you can. Click here to see a complete schedule (PDF) of all the classes being offered.

These are EQ8 computer classes. There will be no sewing during class time.

Please be sure you have the following for class:

  • Laptop with EQ8 software installed, updated, and validated
  • Laptop power cord
  • Mouse (The touch pad on your laptop will work, but having an external mouse makes drawing much easier.)
  • Extra batteries for your mouse, if wireless
  • Mouse pad
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
  • Sweater or light jacket (classroom temperature can vary)

Included with Enrollment

The Electric Quilt Company will provide the following for all enrolled students:

  • Coffee, tea, and water throughout the day
  • Snacks
  • Daily boxed lunches
  • Giveaways!
  • In-class assistance from EQ staff
  • Personal technical support between classes
  • Student discount on EQ products for sale during the event
  • Free wifi during class hours

Lodging and travel are not included in the cost of the workshop. You must make your own arrangements.

We have a block of rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn (walking distance from the classrooms) for $139.00/night + tax. Once you have enrolled at EQ Academy, you will receive a confirmation of your enrollment with a special link for the hotel, as well as other hotel and travel suggestions.

The best airport options would be Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), which is about an hour away or the Toledo Express Airport (TOL) which is about 25 minutes away.

About the Teacher

Mary Ellen Kranz Mary Ellen Kranz
Mary Ellen Kranz has sewn and quilted since childhood. She found her career path in computers but continued to pursue quiltmaking. Her quilts appear in shows and galleries reflecting a broad range of skills and techniques.

Thirty+ years of experience provided her with an understanding of how computer technology could blend together in the process of creating fiber art. Mary Ellen shares her knowledge of how to combine your quiltmaking ideas and vision with the power of EQ8 software. Her classes provide an opportunity to learn and use EQ8 with confidence under the guidance of a creative and patient teacher.
